The CIE 1931 color space chromaticity diagram with wavelengths in nanometers, developed in 1931, is still used today as the standard toĭefine colors, and as a reference for other color spaces.

The CIE works together with the ISO orginisation and is seen by ISO as a standardization group. C61430 6-color LED module: RGB + Amber + Cyan + Lime Rated LED module average lifetime: 50,000 h CRI > 97 (up to 99) 2500K-8000K color temperature. The CIE has its headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Is the international authority in the field of light, lightsources, color and colorspace. The Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE), internationally better known as International Commission on Illumination, The CIE 1931 and CIE 1976 Chromaticity Diagrams In this way the CIE system of colorimetry was simultaneously integrated with the CIE system of photometry.įigure 2 compares the CIE 1931 two-dimensional chromaticity diagram with the CIE 1976 diagram, both of which utilize imaginary primaries.Īlso plotted in the diagrams is the blackbody locus, which represents the chromaticities of a blackbody radiator source, heated to incandescence.įigure 2. The CIE 1931 system of colorimetry uses the photopic luminous efficiency function V( l) as one of the It is possible to abandon the use of real primaries in favor of imaginary primaries that have some useful characteristics. Since it is known that the chromaticity of any light source can be determined by a linear combination of three primaries, In the u’, v’ color space, the same distance between any two points are presumed to be perceptually equal. The CIE 1976 chromaticity diagram was constructed by mathematically transforming the x, y chromaticity coordinates to u’, v’: The blackbody locus represents the chromaticities of blackbodies having various (color) temperatures. In Figure 6, the spectral locus, the purple boundary, and the blackbody locus comprise the chromaticity diagram. Using x, y as the coordinates, a two-dimensional chromaticity diagram (the CIE 1931 color space diagram) can be plotted as shown in Figure 2. From X, Y and Z, the chromaticity coordinates x, y, z can be obtained as follows:įigure 1. The color-matching functions give the tristimulus value X,Y and Z: The 1931 CIE (x, y) chromaticity coordinates are calculated from the spectral power distribution of the light source and the CIE color-matching functions (Figure A-1). Because the less useful brightness and lower visibility of 8000K-12000K, it is easy to cause a traffic accident, unsafe for the road driving. The CIE approximation functions to the black-body curve (that results the CIE Dnnnn values) are about 1% off from the accurate blackbody curve.

For the ECE standard, HID headlight can not be over 6000K, it is illegal to upgrade to 8000K or over 8000K headlight bulb. 3000K is used in high beam headlight kit, such as fog light, it has a highest visibility when driving in the rainy day and foggy day, Most top brand, like Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, their factory HID bulb is about 4300K, which would not higher than 5000K. Low beam headlight kit is usually 4300K-5000K. 10000K and 12000K emits bluish light output. 4300K and 5000K emits warm white light output (4300K is white light with a little of yellow, 5000K is bright white). The sunlight is about 5500K, a pure white 5000K imitates to the sunlight, it is comfortable and will not damage the eyes.ģ000K emits yellow light output. Contrary to 10000K and 12000K, they will cause a poor visibility. However, in rainy day or foggy day, the visibilty of 3000K and 4300K HID bulb might be better. The color temperature high or not won’t influence the brightness of the light. Color temperature is related to the penetration, it has no business of Lumen. The penetration of 3000K and 4300K is the best, comparing to 10000K and 12000K, they are the worst. the lower number with the longest wavelength and the best penetration the light has. But for driving safety on road, I suggest 4300K-5000K, because it is close to the sunlight (white light) that human eyes perceive. Which color you get that depends on what light you want to perform on your car. Different number indicates different color style. “K” represent for Kelvin, it is a unit measure of color temperature. In many HID bulb, there is a “K” marked at the end of the color.
